Narrative

James Sturgill Sr. and his wife Mary Herring first settled on a farm at the forks of New River which he bought from Marshal Davis in 1803. In 1812 he bought a farm in Wise Co. VA but it is doubtful that he ever lived there as census records show all his children born in NC. He sold this farm to his brother John in 1816 and bought a farm 1817 from Joshua Cox located on Jones Branch and the south fork of New River. In the census of 1830 he is shown in both Ashe Co NC and Scott Co VA but he could only have been there for a short time as he was back in Ashe Co in 1834. James and Mary both lived out their lives on the South fork farm and are buried in the old South Fork Church cemetery on Kings Creek. - p.49

It is family tradition that a son of James settled in KY but it is questionable whether or not Elijah was his son. The tradition may have originated from the fact that his son Daniel was apparently in KY for a time and returned to NC. - p. 49
