Narrative
The records of the North Pemberton Parish of Somersetshire England show that a John Stodgell, son of Richard Stodgell, was christened there in 1615. While not proven, we believe that John was the progenitor of the Sturgill family in America. pg 29
Further research by T.H.Sturgill indicates that dad (DAS) misidentified the English information. The only Pemberton Parish I can find is in Northumberland. There is however, a North Petherington Parish in Somerset County (old Somersertshire). It was here that Richard Stogell lived and died. He is mentioned in the Calendar of Wills in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 1653-1656:
Stodgell, Richard, sen., yeo., North Petherton, Soms. 1656 48
Interestingly, another Richard Stodgell is listed in the Calendar of Wills, 1537-1799, and Administration in the Court of the Archdeacon of Taunton, Somerset, England. This records a 1763 death.
Another record, a burial, shows a John Stodgell of Bridgwater, Somerset, England aged 20 years, buried in 1632. This, not our ancester, may well have been the son of Richard. See Calendar of Wills, 1537-1799, and Administration in the Court of the Archdeacon of Taunton.
A web search indicated that there may be Stodgells living in the county to this day. - THS
