Narrative

William Osborn, a merchant, was in Hingham in 1635, went to Salem where he held office and was made freeman May 22,1639. He was born about 1608 as he testified aged 50 Jun.4,1658.

In Jun.1644 he came to Braintree to serve as clerk of the Iron Works and with the decline of that company removed to Boston about 1652 where he died about Apr.1662. His inventory was taken Apr.29,1662 and further inventory Aug.22,1662 showing 110 acres at Wenham, 5 acres at Dorchester.

Administration on the estate was given Aug.26,1662 to the widow Freesweed his late wife in behalf of herself and five children. On Sep.10, a petition was filed stating that the eldest son was brought up to learning and had taken one degree, and so was not to have a double portion, but to share equally with the other children.

The name of his wife is written in many ways in the records Fredisweed, Freezweed, Frizwed, Frizwit, Frizeend, etc. She was admitted to Church at Salem May 23,1641.

He was in England late in 1652 and sailed for New England in May 1653, as shown in Iron Works Co. records & was at the Iron Works in New Haven shortly after.

His wearing clothes, woollen & linnen, hatt, gloves, stocking, boots, shooes & other such like, Ð30/06/10, Total Ð260/16/01.

Inventory of house & land & 1/4 part of a ketch & goods; 1/4 pt. of CatchÐ70; Dwelling house & small plate thereto belonging Ð200; 110 acres at Wenam Ð50; 5 a. meadow at Dorchester Ð7/10/; Debts due to the estate certaine & uncertaine Ð493/17/05; a pcell of English goods Ð14, etc.,Ð835/07/05, taken by Joseph Rock & John Sunderland.

Aug.26,1662, Administration granted on Wm. Osborn of Boston to Freesweed, his late wife & relict in behalf of self & five children.
