The following from entry Descendants of Peter Coffee World Tree Project.

General John coffee was faous as a trail blazer and Indian fighter. He was a general in the State Militia during the Creek War.

He was a representative from Georgia in Congress {1833 - until his deathin 1836} He died on the day he was elected for a second term. (Another account says that he died on a Monday but was re-elected the Friday before. Thus, he became the only dead man ever elected to Congress)

Coffee County, Georgia named after him. His body removed to McRae Cemetery, McRae, GA in 1921

Note: He was twice elected to U.S. Congress and died during his second term. Note: ibid pg 19: fought under in the War of 1812 and the Indian wars. Note: 1812 Ancestors Index National Society of U.S. Daughters of 1812 Vol2 Page 100 lists John A. Coffee as Brig. Gen. Georgia militia in the Creek War. Note: Joshua Coffee, brother to Peter, also had a son John who also was a general in the War of 1812.
