the 1870 census of Gallatin Co. IL lists the birth year of Joseph as 1813 but a known family bible record shows it as 1818 which must be correct as the dates of his brothers are also known. -pg 52

JOSEPH STURGILL was born in Ashe Co. NC and taken to Lawrence Co. OH in 1831 in his fathers family. On the way the family stopped to visit his fathers brother, John Sturgilkl in Wise Co VA and while they were there Josephs mother Sophia became ill and died. It is tradition that she was buried at Black Mtn. but the location of her grave is unknown. Joseph probably married his first wife Rosaline Wiseman in Lawrence Co. OH. No known record. They had one child. It is not known where he married his second wife Susan Clark but they settled in Hardin Co. IL, later moving to Gallatin Co. It is family tradition that Joseph and Susan were buried near Shawnee Town but their grave is unknown. Susan and Joseph had six children. -pg 83
