Narrative

JOSHUA STURGILL and his wife SUSAN LONG spent their lives together on a farm in Ashe Co. NC located on Jones Branch and the south fork of New River. They are buried in a family cemetery on this farm currently known as the Tom Vaught farm. All their children were born here.

Their four oldest sons served in the Confederate Army during the civil war. They participated in some of the bloodiest battles of the war, but all were fortunate enough to survive without serious injury and return home. Three of their first cousins, also Sturgills, died in the war.
